Property Rights and Artisanal Diamond Development: Feasibility of Direct Marketing of Artisanal Diamonds from Liberia and CAR to the USA
- The purpose of this research was to ascertain the feasibility and desirability of establishing more direct trading relations between artisanal miners in the Central African Republic (CAR) and Liberia and international buyers—with special attention to the US diamond industry—on the premise that increasing the price achieved by artisanal miners may make them more able and thus likely to formalize their activities.

Forest Conservation Project Empowers Community to Restore Mau Forest’s Glory
- USAID is assisting the Kenya Government (GoK) to restore the forest and watersheds in the Mau Forest Complex (MFC) through a $7 million, two-year project called ProMara (for the Mara). On March 25th 2011, USAID/Kenya’s Deputy Mission Director James Hope officially launched ProMara at the project’s new Mau Outreach Center (MOC), on the outskirts of the forest. The Mau Forest Complex has a history of illegal and irregular land allocations. In 2009, GoK acted on Mau Task Force recommendations to revoke questionable titles, ordering the eviction of "illegal" settlers from the MFC. This resulted in controversy as well as uncertainty among remaining residents.

Issue Brief: Land Tenure and REDD+: Risks to Property Rights and Opportunities for Economic Growth

In addition, society‘s responses to mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions leading to climate change may provide opportunities for economic growth for rural populations, or dangers to local livelihoods. This paper focuses on understanding how mitigation efforts based on reducing emissions and increasing sequestration by forests (REDD+) may interact with property rights and, by extension, poverty and economic growth for smallholders.

The Impact of National Land Policy and Land Reform on Women in Uganda
- The Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE), a Geneva-based international housing rights watchdog, released a “report card” examining Uganda’s national land policy and land reform processes and their impact on women. The findings in the report are based, among other things, on a survey of women in the districts of Kapchorwa, Luweero and Kampala. One of the main findings of the study was that while there have been many advances in land reform in Uganda that grant women legal rights, custom and practice are still lagging behind the law, leading to a regular violation of women’s land rights.
